BENIN—THREE female police officers from Oregbeni Police Station, Ikpoba Hill, Benin, who went to effect the arrest of a tenant on the invitation of a landlady at Oregbeni quarters, were yesterday beaten and stripped naked by tenants.
Haven gathered that the affected police officers are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in the state capital.
It was learned that trouble started when the tenant insisted on taking her bath before going to the police station, but the police officers said she should follow them.
A fracas was said to have ensued and other residents in the area joined the tenant to beat and strip the police officers.
The landlady, identified as Mrs. Okebuse, said she invited the police because she had given the tenants quit notice.
She said: “When the police came to make arrest, the tenants started fighting the police-women. I ran for my life and hid at the other compound.”
An eyewitness said the landlady always used police to harass her tenants, adding that the woman was taking her bath when the police officers arrived, but was disallowed from continuing with her bath.
Police Commissioner, Foluso Adebanjo, who expressed disappointment at the attack, said the police would not take the attack likely.
Adebanjo said the attackers would be made to face the full wrath of the law.
He said the suspects had already been charged to court.
